What is aspect ratio?

The aspect ratio is the proportional relationship between an image's width and its height. Maintaining it prevents the image from looking stretched or squashed (distorted).

Should I resize or compress an image first?

Always resize the image first to its final display dimensions, then compress the resulting file. Resizing often gives the greatest initial file size reduction.

Why do my images load slowly even after resizing?

The image might be the correct display size, but it may still need a dedicated image compression step (as in Tool #3) to reduce the underlying file size.
